HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORk
A gateway to expanded states and transformation
What is holotropic breathwork?
Holotropic Breathwork is a powerful, non-pharmacological practice designed to access expanded states of consciousness through conscious, accelerated breathing, evocative music, and a supportive, intentional setting. Developed in the 1970s by psychiatrists Stanislav and Christina Grof, Holotropic Breathwork was originally created as a means of inducing altered and psychedelic states for individuals who were unable or chose not to work with psychedelic substances.
Rooted in decades of clinical observation and transpersonal psychology, this method recognizes that the psyche has an innate capacity to heal, reorganize, and reveal insight when given the right conditions. Through breath alone, participants may enter deep states of awareness comparable to those accessed through psychedelic medicines, allowing for emotional release, symbolic imagery, spiritual insight, and somatic resolution.
How DOES IT WORK?
By intentionally altering the rhythm and depth of the breath, Holotropic Breathwork shifts the nervous system and changes the balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the body. This physiological shift can quiet the analytical mind and open access to subconscious, emotional, and transpersonal material. When supported by music and a safe, held container, the breath becomes a vehicle for inner exploration and healing.
Rather than directing or controlling the experience, Holotropic Breathwork trusts the intelligence of the psyche and body to bring forward whatever is most ready to be processed. Experiences may include emotional catharsis, physical release, memory recall, visionary states, or profound feelings of connection and meaning.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Holotropic Breathwork may support:
Emotional release and nervous system regulation
Integration of psychedelic or spiritually significant experiences
Resolution of stored trauma and stress held in the body
Increased self-awareness and clarity
Access to non-ordinary states of consciousness
Spiritual insight and a deeper sense of connection
Somatic healing and embodiment
Creativity, intuition, and expanded perspective
Like psychedelic experiences, breathwork journeys can be gentle or intense, expansive or challenging. The value lies not only in the experience itself, but in how it is integrated and embodied afterward.
How can IT help me integrate or prepare for a psychedelic journey?
Because Holotropic Breathwork can evoke altered states similar to those produced by psychedelic medicines, it serves as a powerful tool for both preparation and integration. For those planning a psychedelic journey, breathwork can help develop trust in altered states, increase somatic awareness, and surface material that may inform intention-setting. For those integrating past experiences, it offers a grounded, body-based way to revisit, process, and stabilize insights without the use of substances.
At Embodied Integration, breathwork is approached with the same care, respect, and intentionality as plant medicine work. The breath becomes a bridge, connecting body and psyche, insight and integration, expansion and embodiment.
